Adbusters #85, Thought Control in Economics, hits the newsstands‏

Attention jammers, activists and cultural creatives:

THE CREATIVE DESTRUCTION OF NEOCLASSICAL ECONOMICS

Deep in a recession and with scary ecological scenarios looming, now may be the ripest moment we’ll ever have to power-shift global capitalism onto a new path. Adbusters #85 asks economics students around the world to join the fight to revamp Econ 101 curriculums and challenge the endemic myopia of their tenured neoclassical profs. Go to KICKITOVER.ORG, read a few texts, download the Kick it Over Manifesto (and other posters) and whack them up in the corridors of your campus. Make sure your university is at the forefront of the current paradigm shift from neoclassical to ecological economics. To subscribe visit www.adbusters.org/subscribe. If you’re an economics student, email kevin@adbusters.org to receive a free issue.

PHYSICAL VS. VIRTUAL REALITY

Have you noticed the contours of your life changing with every must-have technological innovation and minute spent on the Internet? Have you detected any differences in your once richly textured, wildly spontaneous way of being? Have you begun to suspect that the more interconnected you are, the flatter, duller and more predictable your existence becomes?

A specter is haunting the mind of the industrialized world – the specter of the virtual. -Metaverse Manifesto, Orange Montagne

At what point did our computers go from being a tool to enhance our lives to a medium through which to live our lives? -Alan Beck

As the physical world slips away and our culture flattens, the bluish glow of the virtual realm beckons … Suddenly humanity is faced with an existential choice. Will we take the plunge? We’re brainstorming on Adbusters #86 – a vehement investigation of Physical vs. Virtual Reality. Tell us what you think. Send your wildest missives to editor@adbusters.org.

I BELIEVE IN MEDIA DEMOCRACY

Leonard Asper, Canada’s most pernicious media mogul is appealing our stunning recent legal victory against him. Our lawyers tell us he has close to zero chance of winning, he’s just trying to deplete our coffers and make us run out of money before we can finish the fight. Don't let him get away with it! Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that every human being has the right to communicate: to seek, receive and impart information without hindrance. This freedom of speech battle is of tremendous importance for democracy in the dangerous times ahead … help us fight it … first in Canada and then in the US, the UK and Australia. We need to fill up our legal war chest right away: help us by donating.
